Unit IV: Laws and Lawmakers - Follow-Up Activities A+
Level 1
Ask students as a group to create a "bill" that the instructor will sign into law. All students must obey this law for one week. "Amend" the law if students think it need revision.
Level 2
Make a list of the rights of American citizens and give examples of how these rights are expressed. Discuss how students can voice opinions or concerns on public issues. Ask students to write a letter to the President or a Member of Congress telling him or her about a concern.
Level 3
Create a classroom chart showing the various stages of how a bill becomes a law, incorporating the legislative roles of individual Members and committees. Explain the role of the Executive and Judicial Branches in the legislative process. Ask students to find out the names and political parties of their Member of Congress, city or town council members, Mayor, etc. Invite these public officials to the performance of Where Freedom Speaks (A sample letter is included in the productive guide)
