Level 1

Explain to students why buildings need additions and show a picture of the Capitol's development.

Levels 2, 3

Discuss the construction of the Capitol and modifications made over time. Using the pictures from The Capitol Grows worksheet, consider the parts of the Capitol that were constructed in sequence.

Create a timeline of the Capitol's history. Above the line, indicate important events in American history that affected the history of the Capitol, such as selection of the city of Washington, D.C., the War of 1812, the Civil War, etc. Below the line, indicate events in the Capitol's history such as its design by William Thornton in 1792, its burning in 1814, construction of the Dome, etc.
