The Statue of Freedom
- He was the sculptor of the Statue of Freedom.
- It was the date that the last section of the statue was bolted into place.
- In her right hand is a sheathed sword--ready to defend liberty if needed. In her left she holds a shield and olive branch--symbols of peace and readiness to defend liberty.
- She is in repose, serene, and confident.
- The United States traced its democracy back to classical Greece and the concept of a republic to Rome.
- Her headdress is composed of an eagle's head and feathers, with stars adorning it. It suggests strength and a link with our Native American past.
- Jefferson Davis objected to the original headdress, which was that of a freed Roman slave. Davis, the leader of southern slaveholders of the 1850s, asked that Crawford modify the headdress.
- The sun rises in the east- a symbol of hope, newness, freshness. Also, America looked to Europe (east) for much of its governmental principles- the United States hoped to be an example to Europe and the rest of the world.
