Annual African American History Month Lecture

Join us at noon on February 22 to commemorate African American History Month and hear Professor Denton L. Watson present “The 101st Senator and His Legacy of Civil Rights Laws.”

Professor Watson is editor of the Papers of Clarence Mitchell, Jr and author of Lion in the Lobby: Clarence Mitchell, Jr.’s Struggle for the Passage of Civil Rights Laws. Mitchell directed the NAACP’s lobbying effort in Washington, D.C. from 1946 until his retirement in 1978. Working with members of Congress on both sides of the aisles, he earned the reputation as the 101st senator, whom Howard Baker described as a “magnificent lion in the lobby.”

The lecture will be held in Ketchum Hall in the VFW Building at 200 Maryland Avenue, NE, Washington, DC 20002. For more information, call (202) 543-8919 x. 28.
