Step by Step: A Memoir of Hope, Friendship, Perseverance, and Living the American Dream

The program begins at 11:00 A.M. with Bertie Bowman discussing the inspirational story of his journey from poverty as an African American child in the Jim Crow South to his current position as a top Senate staffer.  During his remarkable career, which began as a 13-year-old janitor in the Capitol in 1944, he witnessed history as it was made—from the death of FDR, through the end of World War II, Brown v. Board of Education, the Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam, and Watergate.  Following his talk, Mr. Bowman will take questions from the audience.

The National Mall: Rethinking Washington’s Monumental Core
