Join us at noon on Wednesdays in August to hear four authors discuss their recent books on the history of Washington, D.C. and the United States Capitol.  Bring your copies or purchase books at the lectures and have them autographed by the authors.

 

August 6: Fergus M. Bordewich, author of Washington: The Making of the American Capital  

 

A journalist and author whose writings have appeared in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Atlantic Monthly, Harper’s, and American Heritage, Fergus Bordewich uncovers the hidden history of the founding of Washington, D.C. in his new book.  His previous book, Bound for Canaan: The Underground Railroad and the War for the Soul of America, received widespread critical acclaim.

 

 

August 13: Peter R. Penczer, author of The Washington National Mall

 

Peter Penczer is an archivist at the B.F. Saul Company in Bethesda, Maryland, and the author of Washington, D.C., Past and Present.  A native of Connecticut, he has lived in the Washington area since 1984.  His latest book is a lavishly illustrated general history of the National Mall which explains the history and significance of each monument and museum as well as some forgotten landmarks.

 

 

August 20: Carole L. Herrick, author of August 24, 1814: Washington in Flames

 

Carole Herrick lives in McLean, Virginia, where she is active in many community organizations.  Her first book, A Chronological History of McLean, Virginia, was published in 2001.  Her second book is a lively narrative of the British invasion and burning of the nation’s capital during the War of 1812, enriched by generous excerpts from primary documents.

 

 

August 27: William B. Bushong, editor of Glenn Brown’s History of the United States Capitol

 

William Bushong is historian and webmaster at the White House Historical Association and a former U.S. Capitol Historical Society Fellow.  Several years in the making, his annotated edition of Glenn Brown’s seminal History of the United States Capitol brings that work’s two-volumes together in one volume with all of the original illustrations reproduced in current state of the art printing.
