2011 Volunteer Reception
The U.S. Capitol Historical Society's 11th Annual "Thank You" Reception took place on January 20th in the Capitol Visitor Center. This event receognizes the dedication of our over 100 volunteers that help with a wide variety of tasks that keep the Society running on a daily basis. Our volunteers pitch in during big events, work on research projects, and lead tours for our members and school children.
The evening began with a lively reception and our staff, volunteers, and members of the Board of Trustees enjoying great food and drink.
Steve Livengood, Chief Guide & Manager of Public Programs, began the program by recapping the specifics of how our volunteers helped the Society achieve its mission of educating the public about the Captiol and Congress this past year. Former Congressman Tom Coleman, President of the Society's Board of Trustees, extended his thanks to the volunteers on behalf of the Board. Marilyn Green, Director of Corporate Giving, offered her personal thanks to the volunteers on the Corporate Development Committee that raise funds for the Society's educational programs and events.

The program's keynote address was given by Dr. Matt Wasniewski, Historian of the U.S. House of Representatives and former Associate Historian and Communications Director for the Society. Dr. Wasniewski spoke about the turmoil in the U.S. Capitol during the Civil War and the struggles between the Members of Congress.
The evening was truly a celebration of the work of the Society and of the many, many people who contribute to its mission throughout the year.
