2010 September Events
In pursuit of its mission to educate the public about the history of the Capitol and the Congress, the U. S. Capitol Historical Society will host a series of exciting events in September.
The Society will commemorate Constitution Day with a panel discussion, “Article I: The Establishment of the Legislative Branch.” Guest panelists will be Linda Monk, J. D., a constitutional scholar, journalist, and nationally accredited author, and Mickey Edwards, Director of the Rodel Fellowships in Public Leadership at the Aspen Institute. The panel will be moderated by James Thurber, Ph. D., Director of the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies at American University. Join in as these scholars discuss the role and responsibilities of the Congress as intended by the Founders!
Thursday, September 16, 2010 - 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM
Howard T. Markey National Courts Building, Courtroom 201, 717 Madison Place NW, Washington, DC (McPherson Square Metro)

Author Philip Dray will present his book, There is Power in a Union: The Epic Story of Labor in America (Doubleday; 978-0-385-52629-6; On-sale: September 7, 2010). In his book, Dray delivers a stirring history of the struggles of the American labor movement from the dawning of the Industrial Age to the present day. His compelling narrative dramatizes the long and sometimes bloody crusade for privileges such as an eight-hour workday, safe working conditions, health benefits, and collective bargaining, privileges many Americans now take for granted. He shows that the struggle was not just about hours and wages, but was one at the very heart of America.
